Today Apple launched iPad pro with LIDAR Scanner (Light and Detection And Ranging). For app developers and innovators this is a good news because it will help improving ARKit accuracy.

What is LIDAR?

LIDAR scanners works similar to sonars and have been used in aircrafts for remote sensing using pulsed light to create a 3d map of the surrounding.

What it means for ARKit?

Currently if you use an ARKit app, you have to start by scanning the enviorment and it is not a pleasant experience. If not done right, the virual objects placed may not look right. LIDAR will likely eliminate this by using the LIDAR Scanner built in iPad pro which consists of a laser, scanner and a special GPS receiver. If the rumors are true, Apple might be trying to put all the pieces together for upcoming Apple Glasses (or whatever they end up calling it).

Bottom line is, this is a big step in the right direction and it will help immensely in bringing AR technology into the mainstream.
